What is the Political Courage Test?

Montana Congressional Election 2024 Political Courage Test

Pro-choice Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
No Do you support the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade?
I will vote to codify the standards of Roe v. Wade into federal law.
Yes Do you support expanding federal funding to support social safety net programs such as Social Security and Medicare?
No Do you support a decrease in income taxes in order to balance the budget?
Yes Do you support a wealth tax in order to pay for public programs?
Yes Do you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations, unions, and individuals?
No Do you support protecting government officials, including law enforcement officers, from personal liability in civil lawsuits concerning alleged misconduct?
No Do you support increasing defense spending?
I?ll work to increase defense spending where it can be justified but would pull the money from other areas of overall defense spending at current levels. I am interested in transferring the $130 billion for the Sentinel Missile Modernization Program (already 37% over budget) and the $20 billion appropriated to the Department of Energy for Sentinel nuclear missile warheads. Those funds can be spent for better defenses that do not sacrifice the Montanans living in Montana?s U.S.House District 2.
Yes Do you support federal spending as a means of promoting economic growth (e.g. grants, tax incentives)?
Yes Do you support the federal government increasing funding for affordable housing programs?
Yes Do you support the federal government taking action, beyond those of the Federal Reserve, to alleviate inflation?
Housing costs have become a main driver of inflation for Montana families earning their living in local economies. I will work to make available selected federal land parcels close to Montana communities for long-term leasing to multi-family Limited Equity Housing Cooperatives. The structures must be carbon-sequestering and taller than ten stories in accordance with International Building Codes. In return for favorable lease rates the members of each housing cooperative will benefit from a gain in equity for their memberships no greater than the gain in local median income for the period of time they hold a proprietary lease in the Multifamily Housing Structure.
No Do you support the forgiveness of federal student loan debt?
I do support forgiveness of student loans in exchange for public service, including military service.
No Do you support requiring a government-issued identification in order to vote at the polls?
I support the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and will vote for it.
Yes Do you support government funding for the development of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, geo-thermal)?
No Do you support the federal government allowing permits for drilling on public lands?
Yes Do you generally support gun-control legislation (e.g. red flag laws, boyfriend loopholes)?
I favor federal support of local gun buy-back and elimination programs.
Yes Do you support a government-run (e.g. single-payer) healthcare program, such as Medicare-for-All?
Yes Do you support expanding paid family AND/OR medical leave benefits (e.g. maternity leave)?
Yes Should the government be able to regulate the cost of prescription drugs?
I agree with the 2010 National Academy of Sciences report on reducing demand for drugs by expanding drug treatment programs.
Yes Do you support increasing security along the southern US border?
No Do you support requiring immigrants to return to their country of origin before they are eligible for citizenship, regardless of their immigration status?
I would start with the already agreed upon Immigration and Border Security Bill, particularly the availability of asylum only to those who present themselves at ports of entry. I support the increasing of beds in holding areas, keeping families together, immediate teaching of English to improve employability and military recruitment, and accelerating the judicial review of petitions.
Yes Do you support economic intervention as a means of resolving international conflicts?
Yes Do you support the US providing increased offensive military aid to Ukraine?
No one wins a war, but democracies need to defend themselves against fascist governments that threaten the ideals of the United States Constitution.
Yes Do you generally support increased regulations on social media companies (e.g. Tik Tok, Facebook, etc.)?
Tik Tok needs to be placed beyond the control of Chinese Communist Party Intelligence and Information Warfare Operations. All social media are available to be used by foreign threats to precisely engage the hearts and minds of all users.
1. Use the $130 billion Sentinel Missile Modernization over budget status, using its breach of the Nunn-McCurdy Act, as an example of how to give Congress more influence on defense program cost control. 2. Transition fossil-fueled electricity generation to carbon-free nuclear power electricity generation and petroleum refining to green hydrogen electrolysis of sea water, transported to the Billings and Great Falls areas by repurposed railroad tank cars and the 48 Northern Tier Pipeline. Return salt water brine for disposal in the Pacific Ocean by the same means. 3. Vote to codify the abortion standards of Roe v. Wade.

Vote Smart does not permit the use of its name or programs in any campaign activity, including advertising, debates, and speeches.
